Klopp Fuming With Referee For Not Allowing Sub Before Chelsea Equaliser

As the final whistle sounded following Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday evening, Jurgen Klopp could be spotted giving referee Michael Oliver a piece of his mind.

It's not an uncommon sight to see a manager press a referee for an answer regarding a questionable decision such as a penalty given or not given, or a harsh/justified sending off, but Klopp was unhappy with Oliver's refusal to allow Liverpool to make a substitution shortly before Willian grabbed the equalising goal for the visitors.

It was the first thing Klopp addressed in his post-match interview (which you can see below), but speaking to the media after the game, the Liverpool boss explained that he wanted to bring Adam Lallana on for Philippe Coutinho, and was not allowed to do so.

Rather than the personnel change, Klopp wanted Lallana to deliver instructions to Ragnar Klavan which would have - according to the German - had him perfectly place to stop Willian from scoring.

Maybe ask the ref. I don't know. People can say we are not really smart, but if you want to change the system and bring on a player you need to give advice.

I wasn't happy about it because we wanted to change. In my mind, Ragnar Klavan would have been exactly in the position where Willian would have crossed the ball, so we would have blocked the cross.

So that doesn't feel too good because we couldn't change the system because the ref thought maybe let's time play or something else, I have no idea why he said no, go and play.

My assistant was prepared, I was prepared, the player was prepared, but the ref said go on play, and it was around four minutes. That's what he said to me after the game, 'the goal was four minutes after you wanted to change'. That didn't make me feel much better.

Whether or not Klavan would have prevented Willian's goal - notice how Klopp wouldn't acknowledge it as anything other than a cross - is one thing, but it definitely is odd that the referee would not allow Lallana to enter the pitch when everyone was ready to go.

As Klopp told the media, there were four minutes until the next break in play, which would have made things frustrating enough before the goal eventually came and made it worse.

It's an odd one, but Jurgen Klopp will have no option but to vent his frustration and let it go. You can see Klopp's immediate reaction here:
