Kevin Phillips has today called time on his professional career, which rewarded him with spells at numerous clubs, eight goalless England caps and a Premiership and European Golden Boot for his 30-goal season with Sunderland in 1999-2000.
Sunderland (in a memorable partnership with Niall Quinn) and Southampton got the best out of him, but he scored goals pretty much wherever he went. After scoring the penalty that got Crystal Palace into this year's Premier League, he finished up with Leicester City, with whom he bagged a pair of Championship goals in 10 outings since January.
He was a goal machine, sure, but he is no master of Nordic languages.
