A Kerry GAA Legends side will face a Kerry Soccer Legends team in a charity match this Friday evening at Mounthawk Park in Tralee.
The game is in aid of Alex Fitzgerald, a four-year-old boy from Tralee who was diagnosed with cancer last year. Alex has undergone 10 rounds of chemotherapy but still has a long road ahead with another year of treatment expected. Doctors are currently in the process of harvesting Alex’s stem cells as he will need a bone-marrow transplant in the future.
All funds raised from the game will go towards funding trips for Alex and his parents, John and Siobhan, to Crumlin Children's Hospital where he receives treatment.
Players confirmed for the Kerry GAA Legends include Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan, Darran O'Sullivan, Aidan O'Mahony and Brendan Kealy.
For the Soccer Legends, former Shamrock Rovers man Billy Dennehy - who managed Kerry FC last year and is now the club's sporting director - will line out along with club COO Steven Conway, former player Shane Guthrie and Tralee man Stephen Kelly, who was on the books at Arsenal.
"Going back when Kerry FC was formed, Steven has mentioned about running a legends game at some point," said Dennehy.
"Then over the last few months meeting with Alex and his family, being a neighbour of theirs, I could see first-hand what they are going through and thinking of ways we could help.
"This game was then the perfect opportunity for the game to have a proper purpose. Everyone has been brilliant with their engagement and we’ve received huge support from both the players and the community."
Tickets for the game, which kicks off at 7pm on Friday, February 2nd, can be purchased through the Kerry FC website. You can also donate towards Alex's care through GoFundMe.
