Now 20 years since he won the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, Ken Doherty appeared on RTÉ's Ray D'Arcy Show last night to regale viewers with his memories of one of the great Irish sporting triumphs.
A lifelong United fan, Doherty recalled being invited by none other than Alex Ferguson to parade his new trophy around Old Trafford - the same day United were picking up their fourth Premier League trophy in five seasons.
Prior to fulfilling his dream of stepping onto the Old Trafford turf, however, the world champ was brought by Fergie himself into the players' canteen while they ate lunch, at which point the manager introduced Doherty to United's squad and explained what he had achieved a week previous.
This introduction was met with near deathly silence and widespread indifference, much to Doherty's embarrassment...That is until the club captain intervened, breaking the ice with typical grace. You can watch Doherty tell the story below:
