Juventus and Adidas are set to take the piss this Summer as they schedule the release of a Juventus basketball jersey, despite the fact that Juventus don't play basketball.
The jersey is inspired by their 18/19 kit and quite frankly we don't know how we feel about it. The idea of using a different sports style of jersey to sell more merchandise feels a bit wrong. Sure clubs will slap their logo on any product if it sells, and this is just an extension of that, but the whole idea feels dirty to me. Take a look:
Ugh, rotten. The idea of a mass of fans heading to watch their team play in basketball jerseys doesn't sit right with me. The move is clearly designed to attract the American market and with the recent news that PSG players wore Mandarin jerseys to celebrate the Chinese new year, the move is just another effort by a club to hone in on the commodity that is the football fan.
I mean how can you compare the basketball jersey to the proper jerseys Juventus and Adidas have produced in recent years:
Perhaps I'm coming across as as a curmudgeon here but you have to draw the line somewhere! Adidas will release the jersey in Summer 2018, and I for one certainly hope the trend doesn't catch on.
