"It's a shame in a game like this, after a season like this." Such was the response of Jurgen Klopp to the horrendous errors of his goalkeeper tonight, Loris Karius.
For the second time in his managerial career, the Klopp has now found himself on the losing side in a Champions League final.
While the 2013 defeat with Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in Wembley signaled a terrible disappointment after such stellar work with the German club, the unfortunate nature of tonight's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid may well strike him as worse still.
On a night where his Liverpool side took the game to the holding European champions with some gusto, the first-half injury of Mohamed Salah unquestionably dampened their chances.
Yet, even after the initial Karius mistake that allowed Karim Benzema to open the scoring for Real Madrid, Sadio Mane, stepping in to fill the void, equalised within a matter of minutes.
Naturally enough, Klopp could find little or no room for positives in his post-match comments. Stressing that the second Karius mistake was a result of the initial error spoiling the German keeper's mentality, Klopp did not shy away from difficult questions:
It's really difficult to get rid of the bad thoughts in your mind.
