Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United after two-and-a-half years in charge of the club.
A statement from the club reads:
Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.
The BBC's Simon Stone reports that the caretaker boss will not be either Nicky Butt or Michael Carrick. He will be an external appointment.
However, Carrick will take charge on an interim basis until that caretaker manager is appointed.
SKY SOURCES UPDATE: Michael Carrick will be acting as interim manager of Manchester United until a new temporary manager is appointed - an external appointment is expected within 48 hours. Carrick and Kieran McKenna will continue to take training in the meantime. #SSN pic.twitter.com/8XhT0YWACc
