Real Madrid have won a 15th Champions League title, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 after an enthralling final at Wembley Stadium.

It was a game where the Spanish club were heavy favourites to win, although things did not play out like that in the opening half of the contest. Dortmund were the dominant side, creating a number of massive scoring opportunities before the interval. However, they failed to convert any of them.

That was always likely to come back to bite them, something that indeed turned out to be the case.

Real Madrid have developed a reputation for being a side that find a way to get the job done in the Champions League, even on nights when they have not performed all that well. That was the case once again this evening.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr would be enough to get Carlo Ancelotti's side over the line.

This was the Real Madrid's 15th triumph in this competition, eight more than any other club. It is also the sixth time they lifted the trophy in the last 11 seasons.

Jose Mourinho takes shot at modern football after Real Madrid triumph

This was a fifth Champions League victory for Carlo Ancelotti, now having three wins at Real Madrid to go along with the two he claimed during his time with AC Milan.

He has managed the current squad at his disposal in the Spanish capital brilliantly, getting the most out of a group that has has not always necessarily been more talented than some of their continental rivals.

The Italian received plenty of praise for his exploits from Jose Mourinho, who also used it as an opportunity to take a shot at some of the more modern personalities in professional football.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Mourinho gushed about the approach of Ancelotti and Real Madrid, as well as question teams and coaches who have overlooked such tactics in recent times.

This is Real Madrid, they can be humble. Sometimes it is hard for the big clubs or big players to have that humbleness.

When they played against Man City, they were told 'to beat them, we have to change our philosophy'...

They don't see philosophy, they put cups in the office...

[Ancelotti] is a proper coach, he is not a social media coach. He comes from the meritocracy. Go to his office and see how many medals (he has)...

The club is such a simple structure. You have Florentino Perez, Jose Angel Sanchez (club CEO), the chief scout, and the coach. Simplicity is genius.

(Other clubs have so many roles) because it is trendy...

There is one thing they are very good at. When a player leaves, even if people think that player is very important, there is a reason that they leave.

As is always the case with Jose Mourinho, there was an obvious self-serving nature to those comments. He is someone that is said to no longer be suited to modern football at the highest level, with his disdain for the approach of many of the world's biggest clubs obvious in these remarks.

As for Ancelotti, he has repeatedly shown that he is still very much at the top of his game.

With Real Madrid set to bring in the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick this summer, they will be a force to be reckoned with for quite a few years to come.
