Former Newcastle and Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has announced that he is recovering following surgery to remove a rare brain tumour. Enrique confirmed the illness on Instagram this morning.
Enrique described the last few weeks as "the toughest" of his life, and confirmed he is in recovery.
Sorry I haven’t been around much, It has been the toughest few weeks of my life.. Within the space of one month I have found out the news that I have a rare brain tumor and had surgery to have it removed, I am now in recovery and so thankful, Life is too precious. ❤️?
In an interview with Marca, Enrique was only made aware that he had a tumour on his brain a month ago. Enrique, who retired last September to become a football agent, was visiting Chris Hughton at Brighton when he suffered a blinding headache. When he awoke the following morning with severely blurred vision, he was brought to hospital where it was confirmed he had a very rare tumour called a chordoma, which is located behind the eye. Enrique told Marca that he will now wear an eye patch for a while, although doctors was a chance of his going blind.
The tumour was removed after a nine-hour surgery at a Neurology Unit in a Valencia hospital. He will begin radiation therapy next month.
