Celtic have officially announced the signing of Ireland U19 international Jonathan Afolabi on a three-year deal following the striker's release from Southampton.
The Tallaght native was spotted at Celtic Park for Celtic's 2-1 over Dunfirmline in the Betfred Cup to finalise the move. The striker joins two of his international teammates in Glasgow, with Luca Connell and Barry Coffey both plying their trade at Celtic Park.
Speaking to Celtic TV, Afolabi laid out his objectives for his time at Celtic, which include breaking into the first-team and continuing the "winning mentality" at the club.
The club has great facilities, and a great winning mentality, which is what I want to be a part of. My goal here is to be part of a winning squad, adopt that winning mentality, and learn from the boys. If I can learn from the senior players, I’ll hopefully have the chance to play in front of these great fans. With such a talented pool of players, it’s going to take time and hard work to break in, to prove myself to the manager and the dressing room – but that’s something I would have to do anyway.
Afolabi was one of Tom Mohan's key players as the Ireland U19s reached the semi-finals of the European Championships this summer. The striker scored once in the tournament, notching against the Czech Republic in the final group stage match. He was also harshly given a yellow card in the final minutes of the match, missing the semi-final against Portugal.
Afolabi has been given the number 24 jersey at Celtic Park.
