Following November's World Cup playoff exit to Denmark, it had been expected that a number of veteran Irish players would call time on their international careers. Wes Hoolahan and Daryl Murphy have both done so.

Martin O'Neill does not expect Jonathan Walters to be one of those to hang up his boots just yet.

"I think Jon would like to continue, depending on how things go in the next couple of months," O'Neill is quoted as saying by RTÉ ahead of Friday's friendly game against Turkey.

I think Jon will still want to play when he is 64!

Walters is not one of the 25 players who made the trip for the game in Antalya. The 34-year-old underwent knee surgery in January, a procedure which was expected to keep him out for eight weeks. That recovery period is only now coming to an end.

"He was very, very positive a couple of months ago and I met him down in London when he came down to a check up on how his injury was going," said O'Neill.

"He's still pretty keen, so hopefully that keenness will improve as his injury improves."
