The dominant talking point from the Republic of Ireland's game against Wales at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night was Neil Taylor's shocking tackle on Seamus Coleman in the second half which it would seem broke Coleman's leg very badly.

The reaction to it was generally one of outrage, and there were predictions of the usual "he's not that type of player" dirge almost as soon as Taylor was shown a red card.
no way I'm justifying it. It was a shocker. Just awaiting the inevitable "he's not that type of player"

@ConorMulloy disgraceful tackle. And they better not come out with the "he's not that type of player" garbage after the game.

It came, from former Wales and Celtic striker John Hartson commentating on Radio 5 Live. And Hartson was roundly criticised for it.
"I know Neil,he's not that sort of player" says John Hartson. #ROI #Wales

#bbcfootball .everytime someone breaks a leg the lad who did it "isn't that type of lad". Quick to defend but slow to be honest John hartson
— Mollys dad (@deltabravo64) March 24, 2017
#bbcfootball it's ridiculous for Hartson to say he's not that kind of player. He is because he committed the tackle. Outrageous.

#bbc football John Hartson: Don't give us that rubbish ' I know him he's not that type of player' he made that terrible tackle so he is
— David Bruce (@dabruce1951) March 24, 2017
@5liveSport @BBCSport John hartson should learn to pipe down. To defend Neil Taylor after that cowardly challenge?! Coleman out for 2017/18+
— Moke 🇺🇦 (@MokeSpoke) March 24, 2017
@JohnHartson10 not that type of player seems false logic.if you have just committed a horror tackle you have just become that type of player
— Johnny Barnes (@Johnnybmilandro) March 24, 2017
Didi Hamann didn't criticise Hartson directly but made clear his displeasure at such sentiments being expressed after a bad tackle - also bringing up a terrible tackle Gareth Bale made on John O'Shea.
Why do people talk about a players good character when they go over the top of the ball and risk injury to opponents as Bale and Taylor did?
— Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) March 24, 2017
Game is dead if we let players get away with these challenges. Have a look where O'Shea gets caught, half way up his leg, ball was on deck. https://t.co/BM7sTOCaqa

Chris Coleman came out with the same garbage when interviewed by RTE after the game. Who is that type of player? Nigel de Jong?
