John Giles believes Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino set themselves up for a fall against Juventus in their last-16 Champions League tie.
Speaking on Newstalk, Giles accused the Argentine manager of being unnecessarily "cocky" ahead of a second-leg that had looked firmly in Spurs' favour after.
Having rallied in Turin and salvaged a 2-2 draw in the first-leg, Spurs had looked significantly better than the Italian champions and would have perhaps been slightly favoured to make progress to this year's Champions League quarter-final.
For Giles, Mauricio Pochettino took the promise of this first-leg performance a little bit too much for granted when approaching yesterday's game in Wembley.
Citing Pochettino's comparison of Mousa Dembélé with Diego Maradona as evidence of his arrogance and absolute "nonsense", the former Irish international didn't appear to take kindly to Pochettino's comments regarding Juventus and it's aging parts:
When I was reading the papers, generally, they were talking about this being an old team, and all the old guys playing for Juventus.
Accusing Spurs of "getting carried away" after "a very, very good result" in Turin, Giles believes that the Spurs manager made the critical mistake of 'underrating' a Juventus team that still had plenty of life in them:
I think Pochettino underrated them, and got carried away. We're going to Wembley, we're playing well, we're doing this, that and the other. I think they had it in their mind that this game was won.
Commending Juventus for approaching the game in the best way possible, Giles criticised the "general talk" surrounding the tie that Juventus were not in with a chance of beating Pochettino's Spurs.
A result that will sting many Spurs fans who were undoubtedly thinking of a Champions League quarter-final, Giles is certain this will be a chastening experience for Pochettino's side.
