John Giles is a man of many talents it seems, he can sing (well 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' at least), wear a sheepskin coat like a boss, analyse football and it seems he's also a relationship expert.
In a piece in yesterday's Sunday Independent writing about the breakup of "glamorous showbiz couple" Lisa Murphy and Gerald Keane, Barry Egan quotes John Giles on their relationship.
I spent five or six hours with her at the City West hotel three weeks ago at a charity event in aid of the John Giles Foundation. She never mentioned Gerald once. She didn't even seem to know where he was. It didn't seem like a relationship to me, and in truth, it hasn't seemed like a relationship for a long time – nearly two years.
John Giles got Lisa immediately. "She is a lovely, lovely girl," the Irish football legend told me, "but she seems so vulnerable. Lisa just needs the right man to love her."
Giles was, as ever, on the ball.
That's some insight from Johnny that I would just not have expected. No doubt he further expanded by tell Barry Egan, 'you've got to take every relationship on it's merits'.
