After a tough year sidelined due to injury, John Egan has today sealed a move back to the Championship as he signed a year-long contract.
31-year-old Egan was a free agent after ending his six-season stay with Sheffield United during the summer and also won promotion twice from the Championship during his time at Bramall Lane.
But he has not played since the end of September last year, having suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.
West Ham were weighing up a short term loan for Egan, and he participated in a closed-door match with the club last week. However, there were reports from east London this morning that the deal was not going to happen. The Burnley signing followed hours after.
If pre-season predictions are to be taken into consideration, the Clarets could be in the mix to gain an immediate return to the Premier League come May.
Burnley finished 19th in the Premier League last season with a total of 24 points and manager Vincent Kompany moved to German heavyweights Bayern Munich during the summer with Scott Parker taking the reigns at Turf Moor for this season's campaign.

John Egan ready to get back on the pitch
Egan who has caps for 34 Ireland, made his debut under Martin O'Neill in 2017 and has captained his country on several occasions in recent years. For new Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson, a fully fit and match-sharp John Egan will significantly improve the level of his team.
He will bring solidity to Burnley along with bags of leadership. The Corkman took over the captaincy during his time with Sheffield United after the departure of club legend Billy Sharp.
Speaking to the club's official website, Egan explained how happy he was to seal the move:
The manager, staff and the players all want to be successful. I want to come in and add to that. I want to bring my experience and my ability into the group to help drive the group on. I’m delighted to be a Burnley player now and I’m looking forward to the future.
The news comes a day after fellow Irish international Josh Cullen signed a contract extension at Turf Moor, keeping him at the club until 2027 at least.
Burnley currently sit sixth in the Championship after taking seven points from their opening four games of the season.
