As usually happens in the world of football, the man who John Delaney backs wins.
Gianni Infantino is the new FIFA president, elected on a second count ahead of Sheikh Salman. Infantino won a majority decision with 115 votes.
Infantino stood for UEFA in the absence of Michel Platini, who is suspended from football for 6 years, was understandably overjoyed:
I cannot express my feelings in this moment. I told you I went through an exceptional journey, which made me meet many fantastic people, who live and breathe football, and many people deserve to see FIFA is highly respected.
Everyone in the world will applaud us for what we will do. Everyone will be proud of what we will do.
Infantino will be most recognisable to you as the man who did the competition draws for UEFA. In his absence today, the Europa League threw up the first European meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United in history, so they appear to be doing fine without him.
