I recently rediscovered one of the great Irish sports photos of all time. It's a snap of John Aldridge celebrating after scoring this goal against Portugal in a Euro 96 qualifier.
There's much to love about the pic; the Aldridge celebration, the head of hair on Couto - not to mention his complete look of despondence - and of course John Sheridan looking about 50 but still delighted with life.
However I've overlooked one other aspect. That moustache. That wonderful moustache.
It started its life in black and white and with a barnet to boot
And loved a two-armed goal celebration
Italia 90 ... USA 94 ... matches against Denmark ... the moustache has seen it all
Sometimes it was happy
Sometimes it was sad
Sometimes it got too warm
Even when up against a team of national hunt jockeys, the moustache reigned supreme
All hail John Aldridge's moustache - the source of Ireland's 1990s success
I would have said that you don't see players like John nowadays but in many ways - including their great ability to grow a stellar moustache - Aldridge and Jon Walters are quite similar. Here's a 15 step guide on how to be more like Walters,
