UFC commentator Joe Rogan has spoke out on his podcast against win bonuses in the UFC. The comedian argued that the current structure is unfair due to the incompetence of judges overseeing the fights:
I just don’t like the win bonus. I don’t think anybody fights harder for it. … That to me is a real issue. I think a guy should be paid what they get paid. I think if you have a contract, that contract should be for ‘X’ amount of money. If you have points on the pay-per-view, that’s on top of that. But (I don’t like) the idea that your win or loss has to be in the hands of what we have deemed completely incompetent judges.
Rogan was speaking to former UFC fighter Pat Miletich, and reasoned that fighters that ''train for months and months'', stand to lose so much from judges who "literally don't understand martial arts".
Rogan suggested that the UFC increase the number of judges calling a fight to stop controversial decisions from happening:
The thing that's disappointing to me is that there's a wealth of martial arts experts out there, so many. There are so many good coaches that would be great judges, so many great ex-fighters.
I also think three people is a ridiculously small number (of judges). With five judges, I think we would lose a lot of the shitty decisions.
There's sometimes you get a split decision and you're like what in the fuck one person saw this fight completely wrong and the other two guys got it right. Thank God the other two guys were there. If there was five people and this happens more than once then you say 'okay we got a weak link here', let's get rid of this person'.
