Jayson Molumby was making a late call for the Irish Olympic boxing team as the red mist descended on him during a West Brom pre-season match against Spanish side RCD Mallorca.

The Baggies took on the La Liga side in a behind-closed-doors friendly to prepare for the new season, with their Championship campaign set to get underway on August 10 against QPR.

The pre-season friendly was to take a surreal and violent turn, however, when Molumby launched an extraordinary attack on a Mallorca player early in the contest.

Jayson Molumby throws punches in surreal pre-season moment

Just before half-time in West Brom's pre-season friendly against Mallorca, Jayson Molumby was hit by a sequence of tackles from the Spanish side.

The second of those was a late, mistimed effort from Portuguese Samu Costa, with the referee awarding a freekick to Molumby.

Cappoquin man Molumby would quickly see red, headbutting, pushing and shoving his opponent before the Irish international swiped a right hook and head-locked his opponent. His teammates came in to separate the scrap.

It was a surreal moment.

Even given the nature of the two mistimed tackles, it was an enormous escalation from Ireland international Molumby, and there is no excusing the throwing of punches on a football pitch.

Molumby spent some time as a regular in the Irish midfield under Stephen Kenny, before falling foul of injury issues which ruled him out of the back-end of last season's domestic action.

His head coach Carlos Corberan had previously said that it would be a "challenge" to get Molumby fit for pre-season. It's safe to say he's made his mark, in the wrong way.

This incident comes just days after Wrexham's James McClean was involved in a bust-up with Levi Colwill of Chelsea in a friendly at Levi Stadium in San Francisco.
