Mick McCarthy is one of those managers that always speaks his mind. Whether it be slamming certain sections of Ipswich fans or giving delightfully blunt answers to sports journalists, the former Ireland manager is always a good listen.
This proved to be the case again over the weekend, McCarthy appeared in the BT Sport studio and detailed an incident whereby he took off a substitute after the player had scored, because he had given him dissent:
I put him on and he gave that (motions waving) to the fans and looked at me, the look of dissent and I said to TC (Terry Connor, McCarthy's assistant coach), 'get that number out', he said 'who', I said 'you know who', he said 'he's just scored!', 'I know he's just scored he's coming off, he's not doing that to me, no chance'. Then he came up to me on the bench and said 'I didn't say anything', I said 'oh yeah you did, offski'.
McCarthy then named the player as Jay Boothroyd and claimed the strikers actions were 'disrespectful' to everybody at the club.
However in lieu of this story, Boothroyd himself has had a nibble back at his former coach, taking to Twitter to sensationally claim that McCarthy once head-butted one of his own players:
I guess your tagging me to try and entice me into a response.
Who would believe my words? Managers always win!Yea Mick’s got some great stories, ask him about the one when he head butted a player after the game then wanted him to apologise to him in front of the squad!!

It will be interesting to see if McCarthy is as eager to reveal this player's identity, or indeed if he is willing to verify the story's veracity.
