Louis Van Gaal's first season in charge at Manchester United has seen the club return to the Champions League after a fourth place finish behind Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea, but the team's form has been inconsistent over the course of a 38 game season.
Wayne Rooney said earlier this week to Gary Neville that he feels the squad is ready to challenge for the league title, but another Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp, doesn't share that view and has today dismissed their chances as title challengers.
I think it has been a decent season for United, nothing more, nothing less. There are a lot more questions than answers; (Angel) Di Maria, (Robin) Van Persie, obviously (Radamel) Falcao is going to go, the goalkeeper, it’s going to be a transitional period again for United next season. I don’t think they are close to winning the title next year. I don’t think they will go close.
Redknapp stressed that he believes Van Gaal is the right man for Manchester United, but next year is not the year that they will return to the batlle for the title:
Van Gaal is the right manager for Manchester United but I still feel they are a long way off.
It's a bold statement from Redknapp, as if Manchester United can lure a few of their reported transfer targets to Old Trafford and address some of the issues in the current squad, you would have to feel that they won't be far off, but Redknapp has given his view on how he sees their chances of challenging again.
