Having been on the receiving end of a famous rant from Eamon Dunphy all those years ago, it seems Rod Liddle has managed to piss off another prominent voice in football after he was called out by Jamie Carragher this morning for a comment piece he wrote about Liverpool supporters.
Liddle has been a controversial figure for well over two decades, receiving quite a bit of criticism for his comments in the press surrounding various issues. Despite this, he is still given a large platform to share his views.
The latest example came in a remarkable article in The Times, where he belittled the complaints of Liverpool supporters after they were the target of tragedy chanting during a game against Luton Town last weekend.
In the piece, he suggests that cities and towns being the subject of ridicule is a part of football and that Liverpool fans being upset over this subject was 'ironic'.
Singing songs denigrating the area from which opposing fans derive has been a part of football for at least 70 years, even if it is now rapidly dwindling...
There is no city more proud of its culture and heritage than Liverpool, nor a local population more determined to insist that it has a singularity which doesn’t go along with what the rest of the UK is doing.
Liverpool will always go its own way and does so with a fierce “f*** you” pride at anyone who takes offence. Sing the national anthem and pay homage to the Queen? Nah, la. We don’t do that stuff.
So it is perhaps ironic that when the tables are turned a little, people like Aldridge get upset.
This is one of the worst articles I’ve ever read
Horrendously out of touch.
How are you allowing this to make your paper @thetimes !? pic.twitter.com/DUpKF8no9s— Paul Senior 🥤 (@PaulSenior1) November 12, 2023
Pathetic stuff really.

Jamie Carragher calls out Rod Liddle over Liverpool article
Tragedy chanting has become a major issue in football, with Liverpool the club perhaps most commonly subjected to such taunts. Chants of 'always the victims' are regularly heard from opposition supporters at both Anfield and other venues, with that particular chant being in reference to the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy that claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool fans.
A major newspaper publishing an article that belittles the seriousness of such songs is something that is not really acceptable, as pointed out by Jamie Carragher.
Taking to social media, he called out both Rod Liddle and The Times for the article.
Terrible newspaper column @thetimes today from Rod Liddle, on the reaction from Liverpool supporters being upset with the chants from Luton last Sunday.
It’s strange that he doesn’t mention the Hillsborough tragedy being behind those chants, but writes it off as terrace banter.…— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) November 12, 2023
Terrible newspaper column in The Times today from Rod Liddle, on the reaction from Liverpool supporters being upset with the chants from Luton last Sunday.
It’s strange that he doesn’t mention the Hillsborough tragedy being behind those chants, but writes it off as terrace banter. But you would expect that from him knowing what he’s written in the past & who he still writes for now. Awful journalist.
Also bizarre the sports editor of The Times would allow that column to go in his paper.
With Liverpool consistently forced into releasing statements condemning chants from opposition supporters and the authorities attempting to crack down on the issue, publishing a piece such as this one certainly seems like an ill-informed decision.
Jamie Carragher is right to call it out.
