Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has made a list of the three areas that Liverpool need to address if they are going to be competitive this season.

Arne Slot has gotten off to a decent start as Liverpool manager with a good pe-season under his belt, but when you manage a club of this size, and are stepping into shoes as big as Jurgen Klopp's, then there isn't much room for error.

The Reds are yet to make a single summer signing during this transfer window, and although they enjoyed a competitive season last year, finishing third, the feeling is that they need more power to take them to that next level.

Carragher was able to come up with three weakness in particular that desperately need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

When you look at the Liverpool squad, they are a centre back short, a real top-holding midfielder short and they are missing an attacking player with blistering pace," said Carragher, speaking on behalf of Sky Sports as part of its start of season football campaign.

"When you look at Liverpool’s attack, (Darwin) Núñez has blistering pace, but [Mohamed] Salah is not as quick now, I don’t think (Luis) Díaz has that pace, (Cody) Gakpo doesn’t, (Diogo) Jota is sharp, but we can do with someone in that front line with that pace – basically we want Sadio Mané back in his prime.

"They are the three positions we need filled and I’m not sure if Liverpool will fill all three, but I’d like to believe we’d get two out of those three."

Wataru Endo fulfilled the number six role last season, and enjoyed a good year as the main defensive midfielder, but it is clear that Slot has a different vision for that role.

The new manager clearly wants a DM who is capable of threading passes, getting forward and linking up play as well, rather than someone who is primarily there to stop opponents and upset the opposition's rhythm.

During pre-season the Dutchman has played Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch in that position, and with time rapidly running out to buy a new option, it looks like he will settle for one of those three.

Getting players to adapt their games and play makeshift roles is a necessity for almost every team at some stage in the season when injuries and suspensions gather up, but if you need to do it from the very beginning, then it isn't a healthy position to be in.
