With the window now entering its final few days, Liverpool remain an outlier when it comes to their transfer business this summer. The Anfield club are the only side in Europe's top five leagues that have failed to buy a single player for their first team squad.

That has certainly come as quite a surprise. With Arne Slot coming into the role as manager, it was assumed that the club would back him with a handful of new signings in order to put the Dutchman in the best possible position to succeed in the job.

However, they have so far failed to make any additions to the squad. They did attempt to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, only for the Spain international to then opt to stay at his current club.

In the aftermath of that saga, it was reported by various journalists that Liverpool did not intend to pursue another midfielder this summer. That drew a massive negative reaction from the club's supporters, although some have a theory on their lack of transfer business in recent months.

While they have not made any singings for the playing squad, Liverpool have undergone some major changes in recent months. Arne Slot was their first managerial appointment since 2015, while Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have also come in at board level to run the club off the pitch.

Edwards was massively successful in his previous role as sporting director at Anfield, and while his role will be slightly different this time around, it is expected that he will employ a similar approach to running the club. That includes being patient and deliberate in the transfer market, even if it is frustrating for supporters.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher suggested that Liverpool's lack of spending this summer could even be down to the club already preparing for the next off-season, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk all out of contract at the end of the season.

In the past under Jurgen Klopp, they always worked 12 months in advance. They were always thinking not about this window, but the next window.

They have come in late, they've had to bed a manager in. They've obviously got this problem with the contracts that they've got to fix, as you said, before Christmas.

But the reason why Liverpool I don't think are buying players right now is that they're probably already thinking about next summer.

That might sound ridiculous, but Liverpool in the last few years, even more than that 5-10 years, is that they don't panic in the transfer market.

I love that about Liverpool. Do they need reinforcements in certain positions? Yeah. The squad is big enough, but do they need more quality to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal? Yes.

But when you perform badly in the transfer market or make bad signings, that can knock you back two or three seasons...

I think there are players out there that they like that they may not be able to get, but if something comes up they will be ready to go.

Liverpool could certainly be forced to spend quite a bit next summer in order to replenish the squad, especially if they do not renew the contracts of the star trio mentioned above.

Still, you would imagine that their supporters would be far from pleased if that stops them from bringing in one or two new faces before the end of the current transfer window.
