The fall-out from Martin O'Neill's announcement that Declan Rice is considering switching allegiance to England continues as past and current pros voice their opinion on the matter.
The provisional squad of 31 players for next month’s games against Wales and Poland was announced today and did not include the West Ham player. O'Neill then confirmed that "England have spoken to him."
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane was critical of Rice in the aftermath of the announcement, telling Off The Ball he should not have played the friendlies earlier this year.
This is poor. This is not on. Three caps, all the messages, kissing the badge. The messages and the signals all indicated to him being fully with us essentially. Why play in the first place? Why start playing for us? I don't buy it.
Kilbane took to Twitter to issue a similar sentiment, something James McClean was in full agreement with.
O'Neill did add he remains "hopeful" Rice will declare for Ireland.
