Following Michael O'Neill's dismissal from his post as manager of Stoke City, his former player, James McClean, has posted a rather intriguing photo to Instagram.

McClean, never one to hide his true feelings, posted a photo of himself grinning from ear to ear, with an accompanying smiling emoji.

McClean has major beef with O'Neill. The pair fell out at the end of his time at Stoke City, after the manager forced McClean train with the U23s as punishment for going on international duty while nursing an injury.

O'Neill's dismissal has come after a poor start to the season for Stoke, with only four points from their opening five Championship matches.

James has previously taken at O'Neill via Instagram. When his current club, Wigan Athletic, were promoted from League One last season, McClean posted a celebratory message while also calling out O'Neill for his U23s punishment.

“Where to start.. what a season, this group of players, the staff, the fans.. what a club," McClean wrote. "Immensely proud to be part of it.

“In my opinion the strongest league one probably ever and for us to finish on top is a great testament to all the hard work put in all season and in doing shows we are the best team in the league.. fact.

“To share yesterday with my wains and family too on the pitch are just priceless moments. Not a bad end to a season considering it started in the pre season with a handful of kids in the 23s because I hurt someone’s ego 🥴 HIP HIP hurra"
