Wigan's chances of remaining in the Championship are slim. They currently sit second from the bottom of English football's second tier, five points adrift of safety and both teams above them have a game in hand.
If they do go down then it's probable a number of players would be sold in order to bring the wage bill in line with the lower revenue which will come with being a League One club. One of the prime candidates to move on is certainly James McClean. He has been one of the Latics' better players this season and would possibly have come to the attention clubs with his substitute performance for Ireland against Poland last month.
According to The Daily Star, a possible destination for the Derryman is Newcastle. Derby manager Steve McClaren is current favourite to be the next boss at St. James Park and the Star say that McClean could be one of his first signings. McClaren signalled his interest in the Irish winger by trying to sign him for Derby during the January transfer window but Wigan were unwilling to let him go.
The fee mentioned is £4m.
