The British Isles, while a term which some would contest is geographically correct, is one which causes plenty of uproar politically.

Commentator Ian Darke used it on Saturday while highlighting a stat about Crystal Palace's 2-0 win against West Brom.

The game featured 17 starters from what Darke referred to as the 'British Isles'. A less contentious phrasing which he could have utilised would have been 'British or Irish'. Had he used that less controversial terminology then he probably would not have raised the attention of James McClean.

The Ireland international, born in Derry, of course identifies himself as Irish and had to notify Darke of his error.
