Ireland international James McClean has been awarded £63,000 by the Belfast High Court.
The award, which covers damages and legal costs, will be paid by former UUP councillor Chris McGimpsey after it was found he made a defamatory comment about McClean.
Last November, on BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show, McGimpsey falsely referred to McClean as a "super Provo".
"Today my client, Stoke & Ireland international James McClean, was awarded £63,000 following defamatory comments by a former UUP councillor," said McClean's legal representative John Finucane in a statement on Twitter.
"Mr McClean is delighted at today’s conclusion to this case & trusts this shows his commitment to defend his reputation at all times."
Earlier this year, McGimpsey apologised in a statement read out in court on his behalf.
"Mr McGimpsey did not intend to communicate that there was any affiliation between Mr McClean and the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
"Mr McGimpsey made this statement in the heat of the moment and did so without taking adequate care to consider the implications of those words.
"He accepts that the statement was false and completely inaccurate.
"Mr McGimpsey had no basis whatsoever for suggesting any connection between Mr McClean and the Provisional Irish Republican Army."
