It's been a busy transfer window for Irish internationals with new clubs for Stephen Quinn and Paul McShane among those with new clubs, whilst a new contract for Daryl Murphy puts an end to speculation for him.
Everton's James McCarthy is the latest to be linked with a move away from his club. After Aston Villa's Fabian Delph rejected a move to Eastlands, City have turned their attention to McCarthy to fill their need for a homegrown midfielder to replace James Milner, whilst Spurs are also said to be interested. A price of £20 million has been rumoured, but Everton boss Roberto Martinez has come out to have his say on the speculation via the Irish Times:
He’s not for sale. My responsibility is to bring competition into the squad and we have strong competition for places. We don’t want to lose that. We’re not in a position where we have to sell to balance the books and want to create a winning team.
James McCarthy is a top performer. He has shown that over recent years. We know what he brings with young legs and good energy. He’s a vital part of our squad.
On a scale of 1 to adamant, that's pretty up there. If only all rejections of potential transfers were as definitive as that, there'd be no transfers at all. It looks like this could be the end of it, and Everton will hang on to McCarthy who they spent £13 million on in 2013.
