Everton midfielder James McCarthy has been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying victory over Gibraltar*. The former Wigan man has been suffering from fatigue according to club boss Roberto Martinez and didn't make the Merseysiders trek to Russia during the week for their Europa League tie against Krasnodar.
Interestingly, McCarthy could still feature for Everton against Manchester United tomorrow and Martinez confirmed he has a chance of being available for Ireland's defeat to Germany next Tuesday*. Martinez said:
""Seamus and McCarthy have a chance with the Irish squad, James is a difficult one because of the games he's played. We will know more on Sunday but I have a very good relationship with the Irish association.
"Seamus could make Sunday, but it is early now to make a decision. James is similar; he finished against Liverpool very tired and cramping up, which might be a sign of a small injury."
Andy Reid has also failed to make the cut for the 27 man squad for the Gibraltar game.
