With half an hour gone at the Aviva on Saturday, James McCarthy rose to challenge for a ball with Scotland centre back Russell Martin. McCarthy clipped the Scot with his elbow and was booked by the referee.

Russell Martin told the BBC that McCarthy acknowledged it could have been a red card.

After the game, Eamon Dunphy ripped into McCarthy saying that he "never produces a real performance for Ireland".
