Former Wigan manager Owen Coyle appeared on Off The Ball's outside broadcast from Galway on Thursday night. The conversation turned to the sale of James McCarthy from Wigan to Everton last year.
Coyle revealed that McCarthy was due a "percentage" as part of his contract (presumably this was part of the £13m which Everton paid for him) and that the midfielder donated part of this to the Wigan youth academy.
He's an outstanding player, he's also an outstanding young man, he's a gem of a lad. He came in and he wanted to continue his career in the Premier League, that's only natural. And I'd said to him on the first day of pre-season and I met with his representative and I told him to bring him in and that was the deal, if Everton brought that very deal on that very day then he could go. As it was they were obviously hanging on for as much money as they could get for Fellaini.
To be fair to young James McCarthy, part of his contract was that he was due a percentage and he actually gave a bit of that up to go to the youth academy aswell. He's an outstanding young man.
Good guy is James.
