Jack Byrne's Wigan career could be over been it really got started.
The Dubliner joined Wigan from Man City in a surprise permanent move late in the January transfer window. That came following a disappointing loan spell at Blackburn where he made just three Championships starts. His time at Ewood Park was initially supposed to be a year-long loan. However, a lack of game time meant a swift return to Man City. His sale to Wigan came less than a month later.
After joining Wigan, Byrne endured a similarly frustrating lack of first team football. He made just two substitute appearances for the club as they were relegated to the third tier of English football.
It now appears that Byrne wants to leave the League One side. According to the Wigan Post, he is one of three players not training with the Wigan first team and he has also been made available for transfer.
Manager Paul Cook told the Wigan Post that Byrne, Omar Bogle and Max Power were not in his plans for the immediate future.
We won’t be seeing them at the minute, no.
The transfer window is what it is. If the window was to close, and they are still at the club, then we would have to look at it again in a different light. But for the rest of the window, the lads will be away from the rest of the group.
We’ll be concentrating more on bringing players in, and I’m sure you’ll be happy with the additions that will be coming in - which I feel will be exciting for the club.
Power said last week that he had expressed a desire to return to the Championship if an offer came in for him. He was subsequently banished to train with the club's U18s, being told that he will not play for Wigan while the transfer window is open. It now seems that Byrne is in a similar predicament.
