Incredible scenes as England invited the ITV cameras along with them on the team bus to the ground, where they laughed and joked with Jim Rosenthal. Kenny Samson, who skied the clearance which fell onto Ray Houghton's head, warmed up for the game by doing impressions of Ronald Reagan and Frank Spencer.

Brian Clough was particularly rough on England's performance in the first half. Liam Brady, standing in the stadium, with headphones and a furry mike, took issue with Cloughie's critique of Mick McCarthy (18.30). While the cliche is that Ireland went ahead early and then defended for 80+ minutes, it was only when Hoddle came on late in the game that Bonner was called upon
