It's rare we get a transfer saga in the League of Ireland, so when Damien Duff announced he was coming home, we were all a bit excited. What club is closest to his family home in Ballyboden? Rovers, Bray, Cabinteely?
He'd couldn't go to Cabinteely, could he? Bray were quickly crossed off the list as well owing to their continued troubles, while St Pat's were soon added to the list when it emerged that Duff's own mother thought he was heading to Inchicore.
However, Tallaght always seemed like his most likely destination and now it appears that it is finally about to happen. Reports this morning indicate that the former Ireland star will become a Shamrock Rovers player by the end of the week.
Rovers manager, Pat Fenlon, had suggested the move could be unlikely given the limited budget of the Tallaght side. However, Duff always said that a move home was certainly not about money and it seems that possible stumbling point has been avoided.
