In the aftermath of US president Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Isreal, Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem has announced a name change in his honour.
The decision angered Palestinians and Muslims worldwide but was confirmed with an inauguration at the new US embassy in Jerusalem. The club then released a statement via their Facebook page announcing the change:
For 70 years Jerusalem has been awaiting international recognition, until President Donald Trump, in a courageous move, recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
President Trump has shown courage, and true love of the Israeli people and their capital, and these days other countries are following his lead in giving Jerusalem its rightful status ... The chairmen of the club, the owner Eli Tabib and the executive manager Eli Ohana have decided to add to the club’s title the name of the American President who made history, and from now on will be called Beitar Trump Jerusalem.
The club are currently second having won the Israel Premier League six times. It is not yet known if the change is permanent.
