Who would be the first name on Alex Ferguson's dream Man Utd XI? David Beckham? Roy Keane? Cristiano Ronaldo?
Surprisingly, Sir Alex chose a far more modest player than one may expect, Denis Irwin.
Considering the superstars of world football that Sir Alex has managed over his 27 year Man Utd career, the selection of Corkman Irwin, who won nineteen trophies with the club, is a compliment of the highest order.
When asked what his dream Man Utd XI would be while speaking at a press conference in Glasgow, Ferguson stated,
"I would say Denis Irwin would be the one certainty to get in the team. I called him an eight out of 10.
At Highbury in one game he had a bad pass back in the last minute and (Dennis) Bergkamp came in and scored.
After the game the press said 'you must be disappointed in that pass back. I said, 'well, one mistake in 10 years isn't bad.'
He was an unbelievable player."
