St Mirren suffered a major blow when it lost Ireland international Jamie McGrath to Wigan Athletic last month.  The Meath native had starred for the club since his move from Dundalk in the winter of 2020, especially last season as he played his way into Stephen Kenny's plans.

McGrath's contract only ran until the end of the season, and having rejected an offer to become the highest paid player in the club's history, it left St Mirren with little choice but to sanction his sale to the League One side.

Manager Jim Goodwin had been desperate to hang onto the player, who had previously come close to a move to Aberdeen on a couple of occasions.

Ironically, Goodwin may be the one to now make that move between the two clubs.

Jim Goodwin set for talks with Aberdeen

Aberdeen sacked manager Stephen Glass earlier this week after a poor run of form and have been on the lookout for a new boss in the last few days. They moved a step closer to securing one this afternoon, with Goodwin given permission by St Mirren to speak The Dons.

The Club confirms it has been given permission by St Mirren FC to talk to its manager, Jim Goodwin, regarding the vacant managerial position.

We will make a formal announcement when the process to secure a new manager is complete.

Jim Goodwin one won cap for Ireland at senior level during his playing days.

A native of Waterford, he has done an excellent job since taking over at St Mirren back in 2019. Prior to that he had spent three years at Alloa Athletic, acting as player manager.

At only 40-years old, he still has plenty of room to grow as a coach. Aberdeen should give him the opportunity to compete further up the division, with the club one of the larger spenders in the Scottish Premiership despite currently finding themselves in eighth place.
