Martin O'Neill has trimmed his provisional squad by five to a 26-man group for the upcoming games against Wales and Poland.

Goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara - who has linked up with the U21s for the qualifiers against Kosovo and Germany - along with Darragh Lenihan, Greg Cunningham, Harry Arter and Shane Long are the players to drop out of the group.

Long misses out due to a foot injury he picked up at the weekend. The reasons for Arter's absence are more nebulous. The midfielder was reportedly involved in a row with Roy Keane earlier this summer. There have been suggestions that he is now refusing to be part of the Ireland set-up.

James McCarthy, Robbie Brady, Scott Hogan and Seani Maguire were also ruled out of involvement due to injuries.
