Mick McCarthy has trimmed his squad to 25 players for next month's Euro 2020 qualifier against Switzerland and the friendly against Bulgaria.
McCarthy said that players having game-time was a major factor in his selection.
Following a long absence from Ireland squads, main due to injury, Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy makes his return. Shamrock Rovers' Jack Byrne has also been included.
Robbie Brady misses out due to a rib injury as does Harry Arter due to him requiring an ankle procedure.
There is also no place for Shane Long in the squad. The Tipp man played 15 minutes off the bench in Southampton's League Cup win against Fulham at the weekend. That has been his only appearance for the club this season.
Young trio Michael Obafemi, Troy Parrott and Nathan Collins have all joined up with Stephen Kenny's U21 squad.
Ireland play Switzerland on September 5th and Bulgaria on September 10th. Both games will be held at the Aviva.
