Nowhere near good enough.

That's the sentiment that most Ireland fans will carry away from tonight's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Greece in Athens. The performance from Stephen Kenny's side wall well short of the required standard, looking porous at the back and lacking an attacking edge at the other end of the pitch.

This result is a huge blow to the team's Euro 2024 qualification hopes, with a minor miracle now required to finish in the top two.

Here's how we rated the performances on the night.

Ireland player ratings vs Greece

Gavin Bazunu - 7

Made an absolutely stunning save to keep Ireland level inside the opening five minutes, following it up with one or two more crucial interventions soon after.

There was little he could do about either goal.

Nathan Collins - 7

Collins probably did more to beat the Greek press than any other Irish player in the opening half hour. He showed brilliant awareness to get on Evan Ferguson's flick on to score the equaliser.

He came close to getting them back on level terms for a second time with a long range strike in the second half and did attempt to get the team moving forward throughout.

Ireland's best outfield player on the night.

John Egan - 6

Under quite a bit of pressure from the Greeks, Egan held up well in the middle of the Irish back three. His passing was to a decent level, although the ball was quite often returned to him by the midfielders as they failed to advance up the pitch.

Reasonably solid considering the circumstances.

Darragh Lenihan - 4

Making only his third start for Ireland, Lenihan was solid in the first half despite some fierce pressure from the home side.

His forward passing was not up to the required standard, more often than not being cut out by the opposition when attempting to play though the lines. It's worth pointing out that most of the Greek attacks seemed to come down his side.

Matt Doherty - 3

Looked rather suspect at the back during the opening exchanges, being beaten too easily on a couple of occasions. He also lacked composure on the ball, conceding possession cheaply on more than one occasion.

He threatened to link well with Smallbone down the right at times, but often let himself down with the final touch or pass. Sent off at the end for a moment of stupidity.

In short, he performed like someone who has only played a total of 16 minutes at club level since the end of January.

Callum O'Dowda - 4

Made a couple of key interventions at the back in the early stages, but the way in which he raised his arm to concede the penalty was incredibly poor.

He was equally culpable in the second goal, allowing Greece to get in behind far too easily. He was substituted soon after.

Josh Cullen - 5

Cullen needed to show more in helping Ireland beat the Greek press, but he rarely got on the ball and played it forward in the opening half.

That largely continued in the second half, although Cullen was one of the few players that did attempt to press the opposition.

Jayson Molumby - 4

Molumby's passing was poor at times, while he also failed to provide the type of pressing in the middle third that we have to expect.

One moment in the second half summed up his performance. After being played in a huge amount of space by Collins, he galloped forward before passing the balls straight to an opposition defender in a dangerous area.

He worked hard but more is needed from him in games such as this one.

Will Smallbone - 5

Offered very little in terms of defensive stability in the opening half, with Smallbone often out of position as Greece cut through the Irish midfield. He looked good on the ball, although he lacked awareness when out of possession and was pulled all over the pitch by opposition midfielders.

Other than his set-piece delivery, he did not contribute much.

Adam Idah - 4

Idah was a willing runner down the channels, although his teammate rarely found him in the opening half. When the ball did get into forward areas, he didn't offer much of an attacking threat.

He was somewhat of a non-factor, coming off at halftime.

Evan Ferguson - 6

Ferguson showed some wonderful touches in the opening half, the most important of which came when he flicked the ball on for Nathan Collins for the Ireland equaliser.

The Brighton man got next to no service from his teammates over the course of the game.

Substitutes

Mikey Johnston - 6

Coming on at halftime, his immediate impact was a negative one. He failed to put up any sort of defensive effort for Greece's second goal, allowing the ball to be played in behind.

Johnston did look to bring a bit of pace and trickery when he got on the ball, something that could not be said about many of his teammates.

James McClean - 5

McClean provided a bit more solidity than O'Dowda after coming on, although you would have hoped for more from him in forward areas.

Jason Knight - 5

Worked hard but did not contribute much in forward areas after coming on.

Michael Obafemi & Troy Parrott - N/A

Not on long enough to rate.
