Irish soccer fans finally have some reason to celebrate as Ireland have risen four places to 66th in the latest FIFA rankings.
Despite having suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to European powerhouses Portugal in their last match on June 10, the Boys In Green have climbed the ranking table. They move ahead of their September friendly opponents Oman, who are now ranked 67th.
This marks the first time the Irish team has moved up in the rankings since a series of poor results saw them plummet to a record low berth of 70th in June. Martin O'Neill's side have also overtaken Israel and South Africa.
World Cup champions Germany claim the coveted top spot, with Argentina and the Netherlands coming in at second and third respectively. England remain at 20th position, Scotland have dropped one place to 28th while Wales have climbed three spots to 41st.
The next FIFA ranking update will be released on Septmeber 18.
