Jamie McGrath has gone through a difficult patch in his career over the last 18 months or so.
Back in 2021, the Meath man was very much in the ascendancy at St Mirren. The midfielder was starring in the Scottish Premiership, while he also made an impressive breakthrough with Ireland and looked like he had the potential to establish himself as a key played under Stephen Kenny.
Since then, things haven't exactly gone to plan.
Moving to Wigan Athletic in January of last year, he would go on to appear in only two League One appearances as the club secured promotion to the Championship. He was then sent back to Scotland on loan that August, impressing once again on loan at Dundee United despite the club's relegation.
Due to go back to Wigan this summer, his future is very much up in the air. However, it seems he could be offered an intriguing escape route from the club in the weeks ahead.
Scottish club looking to sign Ireland player Jamie McGrath
The Herald are reporting that Hibernian are interested in signing Jamie McGrath this summer.
With only 12 months remaining on his Wigan contract and having hardly featured for the club, you'd imagine that the Irishman would be available for a reasonable price in the current transfer window.
Dundee United are also interested in making his loan move a permanent one, although their relegation makes that an unlikely prospect.
Hibernian finished fifth in the Scottish Premiership this season and will be be in the Europa Conference League qualifiers next season, with the lure of European football something that is sure to intrigue potential new recruits.
Having struggled to make an impact in England, you would imagine that McGrath might welcome the opportunity to return to Scottish football. Speaking to the Scottish Herald a couple of weeks ago, he admitted that he was uncertain about his next move:
I am not too sure what’s on the horizon for me.
I didn’t envisage what has happened here this season (relegation) so I have been trying to get over that in the last few days.
Whatever happens in the summer happens, I’ve not really thought about it. The last few days since relegation was on us I’ve thought about that and nothing else. I’ll take a few weeks off and then see what’s happening.
Hibernian would be a good option for McGrath, who needs to put down permanent roots at a club in order to get his career back on track.
For now, he will be focusing on his role in the Ireland squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers against Greece and Gibraltar.
