It may have seemed that Giggs had only a minor role in the United backroom last night but if this story from BBC 5Live's Ian McGarry is to be believed then the Welshman had a lot more influence than we thought.
McGarry claims that the signing of Thiago Alcantara last summer was all but done until Giggs made his feelings about the player known in a meeting of the backroom staff. While everyone else was in agreement to confirm the deal, Giggs said that he felt Thiago wasn't a Man United kind of player – to which Phil Neville then nodded in agreement.

UPDATE
For what it's worth, some are reluctant to believe McGarry.
Last tweet - McGarry is about as reliable as a Scoda without an engine so take it with a pinch of salt!
