Romelu Lukaku's return to Chelsea has been an unmitigated disaster.

Signing for the club last summer for £100million and being hailed as the final missing link in Thomas Tuchel's side, few could have predicted just how badly things would go for him at Stamford Bridge. He would manage only eight goals in the league and found himself largely out of the side by the end of the campaign.

Lukaku was making noises about returning to Inter Milan only a few months into his Chelsea stint and it now looks as though he will get his wish. The two clubs are close to agreeing a loan deal that will see the striker return to Italy.

While the Belgian has been outspoken in his love for Inter, not all associated with the club are all that keen on his return.

Inter Milan ultras address Romelu Lukaku return

The Inter Milan ultra group 'Curva Nord' have released a statement ahead of the the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and it's fair to say that they will not easily forget his past indiscretions.

The group say that while they will not actively boo the player, he has quite a bit to do before they will consider forgiving him for leaving the San Siro in 2021.

Curva Nord supports Inter Milan and will not stage any protest against the player (despite his behaviour last summer).

That being said, nobody shall go and welcome him with scarves and banners representing the Curva or its groups. He will need to earn everything that, in case, will be done for him in the future with humility and sweat on the pitch.

He was supported (and treated) like a king, now he’s just a player like many others. It shall also be clear to everyone that we will never cheer against Lukaku if he will wear the Inter jersey again.

We encourage all Interisti [Inter supporters] not to fall in the other trap, to run and drool after him. Clearly there is an instinctive and emotional element, but to pretend that nothing has happened would only accelerate that process aimed at making us all dumb and slavish consumers.

We took note of Lukaku’s betrayal and we were extremely disappointed. With time we can even forgive such things to a footballer, but the facts won’t change. Now, Romelu, let’s kick and run.

Romelu Lukaku scored 64 goals in his two campaigns at Inter Milan, leading the club to a first league title in over a decade during the 2020/21 campaign.

If he can replicate that type of production going forward, he may even get the ultras back onside.
