Ian Wright Had Wacky Suggestion For How To Fix Glaring England Issue

It's safe to say England are yet to set the world alight during EURO 2024 thus far.

Gareth Southgate's side are through to the last 16 as Group C winners but only after labouring their way through what looked to be a straightforward group on paper.

A nervy opening night win against Serbia was followed by a lifeless draw against Denmark last week before a similar performance produced a dour stalemate against Slovenia on Tuesday night. Five points was ultimately enough to see them top the group.

After the draw against Denmark drew criticism from the English media, Southgate made one change to his team for Tuesday night, bringing Conor Gallagher in in midfield in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, he would quickly see the error of such a move, hooking Gallagher at half-time in favour of Kobbie Mainoo.

19-year-old Mainoo impressed during his 45-minute appearance on Tuesday, and Gary Neville said on ITV after the game that he expected the Manchester United midfielder to start in England's last-16 tie.

Ian Wright beside him had a far more radical suggestion on how Southgate could fix the badly misfiring England attack.

Ian Wright suggests playing Bukayo Saka at left-back

England have scored just two goals at EURO 2024 thus far, with the attacking setup looking seriously underwhelming ahead of the knockout stages.

The crux of the issue appears to be the incompatibility of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden in the same starting XI, a point that Didi Hamann hammered home on RTÉ on Tuesday night.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer put his name firmly in the mix for selection with an impressive performance off the bench in Cologne on Tuesday, with Roy Keane among those who called for the 22-year-old to start in the last 16.

The issue is where Palmer fits in - and Ian Wright had a wacky suggestion on how to fit him into the starting XI on ITV on Tuesday night.

As great as [Bukayo] Saka has done for England with his creation and goals and assists...he's a naturally left-sided player.

He started playing for England and Arsenal at left-back. People might say, 'oh you can't change him from there, he's doing so well!'

But, if that's going to give the balance and you can get Cole Palmer in the team there, it's something that you have to at least look at.

The suggestion harks back to the days when a teenage Saka burst onto the scene at the Emirates, featuring as a regular at left-back for Arsenal during the COVID-interrupted 2019-20 season.

Ian Wright also explained that playing Saka on the left flank would solve the issues caused by playing the right-footed Kieran Trippier at left-back.

I know you'll say Kyle Walker can play there [left-back] - but then you have the same situation where you have a right-footed left-back who's coming inside and you've got no-one going around.

Saka's a natural left-footer, we could activate that whole left side.

Despite all of the potential benefits, Saka has firmly nailed down his place at right wing through his consistent performances for England over the past few years.

The Arsenal star is also firmly out of practice in the position, with well over four years having passed since he was a regular at left-back. To play him in a defensive role entering the knockout stages would be a major risk for England.

For Southgate to remove one of the few functioning elements of England's attack would be a bold move, unlike anything we have seen from him in the past.

It is clear that there are major issues with the balance of this England team and, even if they do have an easy path to the final, they may be too glaring to see past if we are to consider them genuine contenders for the Henri Delaunay trophy.
