It took a while for Manchester United's Armenian playmaker to announce his arrival at Old Trafford, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan exploded onto the scene during the month of December showing exactly why the club paid £26.3m to bring him in from Borussia Dortmund.
While he may not have played many games, he has put in man of the match performances on numerous occasions and left no doubt as to the quality that he possesses.
Further evidence of that comes in the remarkable announcement made by Man Utd that Mkhitaryan and won the December goal of the month competition, and also placed in first and second runner up.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s remarkable scorpion kick for Manchester United against Sunderland has unsurprisingly taken a landslide victory in our latest Goal of the Month poll.
The instinctive, skillful finish, which sealed a 3-1 win over the Black Cats at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, claimed 79 per cent of fans’ votes on ManUtd.com, from a 10-goal shortlist.
In an unprecedented result, the playmaker also finished second and third in the voting, for his efforts against Zorya Luhansk (nine per cent) and Tottenham Hotspur (four per cent).
The scorpion kick a clear and deserved winner, it was also named Match Of The Day's goal of the month for December. The Spurs goal was more about Ander Herrera's assist and the significance of the goal, although it was very well taken.
While Zlatan Ibrahimovic took the player of the month award, Mkhitaryan and the Man Utd fans will be happy to see his outstanding play acknowledged.
