Last night's game against Wolves will have hammered home the fact that Manchester United still have some work to do in the transfer window before it shuts in the coming weeks.
The way in which their midfield was exposed in the season opener hammered home the fact that they need to bring in another body in that position. Signing a defender could also be on the agenda in the weeks ahead.
In saying that, the club could well have to shift some deadwood from the squad before they get any more incomings over the line.
Harry Maguire is one name that had been expected to leave the club, with West Ham agreeing a £30million transfer fee for the defender in recent days. However, that deal now seems to have collapsed as the player continued to delay in committing to the move.
As is often the case in such instances, it seems this is coming down to money.
Harry Maguire wants large payoff to leave Manchester United
With Harry Maguire likely to take a sizeable pay cut if he moves to West Ham, it seems that the England international will seek a sizeable payoff if he is to leave Manchester United.
The Guardian are reporting that the player will look to receive £7million if he is to accept an exit from Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window.
Despite being dropped for large periods last season, Maguire received a sizeable pay increase in recent months after Manchester United qualified for the Champions League for the upcoming campaign. This is said to be playing a part in his decision to ask for a payoff in any deal to leave the club this month.
While some will question the motivations of a player seeking such an arrangement, this points to the reckless way in which United have conducted their transfer and contract business over the last few years.
Having spent a world record fee on Harry Maguire, they now could be forced to pay him off in order to leave the club.
