Greg Cunningham tore his ACL while playing for Blackburn against QPR at the weekend.
The Galwayman, who is on loan at Blackburn from Cardiff, announced the awful news via Twitter on Thursday, saying:
"Gutted to say I’ve received the results of my scan from the knee injury I sustained at the weekend and unfortunately I’ll be out for a number of months with a torn ACL.
"After taking a few days to process this, I’m now looking forward to the first stages of my recovery!!"
The 28-year-old, whose career has been blighted by injury, was due to be part of the Ireland squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Georgia and Switzerland.
Cunningham was one of the options to take the suspended Enda Stevens's place in Mick McCarthy's side for the game against Georgia.
17 minutes into Saturday's game against QPR, that possibility was ended when Cunningham left the pitch with what turned out to be that devastating injury.
Derrick Williams was subsequently drafted into the Ireland squad as cover for Cunningham and Darragh Lenihan who was also injured while playing for Blackburn.
